## Key takeaways

- Choose a short name that is easy to say and spell and fits what you make, then check the domain, the social handles, other brands and the trademark register before you design anything.
- When we checked 50 possible brand names on November 7, 2026, the exact .com was already registered for 49 of them, including all 40 made of everyday words.
- Putting wear in front of the name freed a .com for 16 of 20 two-word names, but for only 2 of 20 one-word names.
- Unregistered is not the same as cheap: the eight one-word .shop names for sale were premium names at $625 to $3,125 for the first year.
- In the US, a trademark application costs $350 per class at the USPTO, and clothing sits in class 25. Search the free register first.

To name a clothing brand, write a list of short names that fit what you make and who it is for, say each one out loud, then check four things before you commit: the domain, the social handles, other brands and the trademark register. Check early. When we ran 50 names through the registry lookup KickStart's domain search uses, 49 already had their .com registered.

- **49 of 50** names had the exact .com taken
- **16 of 20** two-word names were free with wear in front
- **$350** per class for a US trademark filing

## What a clothing brand name has to do

1. **One to three words** It sits on a chest, a hat and a label
2. **Fits your customer** Late nights in the city and weekend hikes sound different
3. **Reads as a logo** Picture it in heavy capitals on a hoodie
4. **Room to grow** Do not tie it to one piece or one city

Step 1 of [how to start a clothing brand](https://trykickstart.app/blog/how-to-start-a-clothing-brand) helps you define the customer, and [clothing brand logo ideas](https://trykickstart.app/blog/clothing-brand-logo-ideas) shows how a name looks in five logo styles.

## Seven naming patterns that work for clothing

| Pattern | Example | How easy to get |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One real word | Harbor, Static | Hardest: every .com we checked was taken |
| Two-word phrase | Late Shift, Slow Sunday | Often free with wear in front |
| Invented word | Kitharo | Easiest to own, needs explaining |
| Your name | First and last name | Depends on the name |
| A place | North Field, High Desert | Medium |
| Name plus a clothing word | Late Shift Clothing | Good for domains, longer to print |
| Initials or numbers | LS, 07 | Hard to search and own |

Say your favorites to a friend and ask them to spell them back. If they cannot, people will not find you after hearing the name.

## How often the name is already taken: our check of 50 names

On November 7, 2026 we checked 20 one-word names, 20 two-word phrases and 10 invented words against six addresses, using the public registry record for each domain (RDAP, and WHOIS for .co). Registered means someone holds it: a business, a parked page or a name for sale.

**Addresses still free for 20 two-word brand names**: Not one exact .com was free for the two-word names, but wear plus the name was free 16 times.

| Item | Free |
| --- | ---: |
| Exact .com (lateshift.com) | 0 of 20 |
| wear + name (wearlateshift.com) | 16 of 20 |
| name + clothing (lateshiftclothing.com) | 7 of 20 |
| name + studio (lateshiftstudio.com) | 3 of 20 |
| .shop (lateshift.shop) | 5 of 20 |
| .co (lateshift.co) | 0 of 20 |

| Still free | One word (20) | Two words (20) | Invented (10) |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Exact .com | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| wear + name .com | 2 | 16 | 9 |
| name + clothing .com | 1 | 7 | 9 |
| name + studio .com | 0 | 3 | 6 |
| .shop | 9 | 5 | 3 |
| .co | 0 | 0 | 3 |

Everyday words are gone as .coms, and 9 of 10 invented names were taken too. Two words plus wear is the most reliable path. The names: Atlas, Ember, Nomad, Drift, Haven, Summit, Lunar, Relic, Fable, Vandal, Saint, Raven, Harbor, Canyon, Static, Velvet, Cinder, Orbit, Tide, Wolf; Late Shift, Quiet Hours, Night Market, Slow Sunday, Open Road, North Field, Paper Moon, Wild Oats, Salt Flats, Low Tide, Golden Hour, Small Batch, Second Wind, Back Lot, High Desert, Rough Draft, Common Thread, Long Weekend, Blue Hour, Odd Socks; Velmora, Tavique, Solvane, Quarlo, Lunova, Brakko, Ferrow, Ombrel, Kitharo, Zentro. Availability changes daily, so run your own check.

## What a domain costs and what it renews at

Prices from KickStart's domain search (registrar: Name.com) on November 7, 2026:

- **$13.99** a .com, then $21.99 a year
- **$2.99** a .shop, then $59.99 a year
- **$29.99** a .co, then $44.99 a year

Unregistered is not the same as cheap: eight one-word .shop names were for sale as premium names at $625 to $3,125 for the first year. To see who holds a taken domain, search it on [ICANN Lookup](https://lookup.icann.org/en).

## Check the handles and other brands

Use one handle everywhere, ideally the same words as your domain (wearlateshift, not lateshift2026). Check it inside the Instagram or TikTok app: a profile that does not load is not proof the handle is free. Then search the name with clothing, apparel and brand. The USPTO's page on [likelihood of confusion](https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/search/likelihood-confusion) explains that similar sound, look or meaning can conflict when the goods are related.

## Search the trademark register

In the US, search the USPTO's free [Trademark Search](https://www.uspto.gov/trademarks/search) for the name, its plural and sound-alikes. Clothing is class 25, "Clothing, footwear, headwear." Registering is optional, but a registration protects more than using the name. Filing costs $350 per class since January 18, 2025. A clear search is not a guarantee, so ask a trademark attorney before spending real money on a name.

## A naming checklist

1. **Write 20 names** Across two or three patterns
2. **Say them out loud** Cross out any people misspell
3. **Check the domains** Including wear plus the name; note renewals
4. **Check the handles** In the Instagram and TikTok apps
5. **Search other brands** Same or similar names in clothing
6. **Search trademarks** Class 25
7. **Register the domain today** A free name can go at any time

## How KickStart checks a name for you

At the domain step, KickStart checks your name across several addresses at once and shows the first-year and renewal price of each free one.

![KickStart's domain search for the brand name Late Shift: lateshift.com, lateshiftstudio.com and lateshift.shop are marked taken, and wearlateshift.com is available for $13.99 the first year and $21.99 a year after](https://trykickstart.app/blog/how-to-name-a-clothing-brand/domain-search.webp)

Buy the domain in KickStart or connect one you own. The name then carries through to your [logo, store and launch posts](https://trykickstart.app/studio).

**Name it, check it and design it in one place.** Check domains for your brand name, then design a logo and your first pieces during a 7-day trial for $1. [See plans and pricing](https://trykickstart.app/pricing)

## Questions about naming a clothing brand

### How do I come up with a clothing brand name?

Start from your customer and the feeling of the clothes, write 20 names across a few patterns, keep the ones people can spell, then check domains and trademarks.

### Should my brand name include the word clothing?

Not in the name, but it helps with domains: adding clothing freed a .com for 7 of 20 two-word names. Adding wear in front worked more often.

### Is a .shop or .co domain fine?

Yes, if the renewal works for you. A standard .shop renews at $59.99, and every real-word .co we checked was taken.

### Do I need a trademark before I start selling?

No, registration is optional. Search the register before launch so you do not rename after printing labels.

### What if the name I want is taken?

Add a word rather than misspelling it. A misspelling sounds the same and can still confuse customers.
