To name a clothing brand, write a list of short names that fit what you make and who it is for, say each one out loud, then check four things before you commit: the domain, the social handles, other brands and the trademark register. Check early. When we ran 50 names through the registry lookup KickStart's domain search uses, 49 already had their .com registered.

  • 49 of 50names had the exact .com taken
  • 16 of 20two-word names were free with wear in front
  • $350per class for a US trademark filing

What a clothing brand name has to do

  1. One to three words

It sits on a chest, a hat and a label

  2. Fits your customer

Late nights in the city and weekend hikes sound different

  3. Reads as a logo

Picture it in heavy capitals on a hoodie

  4. Room to grow

Do not tie it to one piece or one city

Step 1 of how to start a clothing brand helps you define the customer, and clothing brand logo ideas shows how a name looks in five logo styles.

How often the name is already taken: our check of 50 names

On November 7, 2026 we checked 20 one-word names, 20 two-word phrases and 10 invented words against six addresses, using the public registry record for each domain (RDAP, and WHOIS for .co). Registered means someone holds it: a business, a parked page or a name for sale.

What a domain costs and what it renews at

Prices from KickStart's domain search (registrar: Name.com) on November 7, 2026:

  • $13.99a .com, then $21.99 a year
  • $2.99a .shop, then $59.99 a year
  • $29.99a .co, then $44.99 a year

Unregistered is not the same as cheap: eight one-word .shop names were for sale as premium names at $625 to $3,125 for the first year. To see who holds a taken domain, search it on ICANN Lookup.

Check the handles and other brands

Use one handle everywhere, ideally the same words as your domain (wearlateshift, not lateshift2026). Check it inside the Instagram or TikTok app: a profile that does not load is not proof the handle is free. Then search the name with clothing, apparel and brand. The USPTO's page on likelihood of confusion explains that similar sound, look or meaning can conflict when the goods are related.

Search the trademark register

In the US, search the USPTO's free Trademark Search for the name, its plural and sound-alikes. Clothing is class 25, "Clothing, footwear, headwear." Registering is optional, but a registration protects more than using the name. Filing costs $350 per class since January 18, 2025. A clear search is not a guarantee, so ask a trademark attorney before spending real money on a name.

A naming checklist

  1. Write 20 names

    Across two or three patterns

  2. Say them out loud

    Cross out any people misspell

  3. Check the domains

Including wear plus the name; note renewals

  4. Check the handles

In the Instagram and TikTok apps

  5. Search other brands

Same or similar names in clothing

  6. Search trademarks

    Class 25

  7. Register the domain today

A free name can go at any time

Questions about naming a clothing brand

How do I come up with a clothing brand name?

Start from your customer and the feeling of the clothes, write 20 names across a few patterns, keep the ones people can spell, then check domains and trademarks.

Should my brand name include the word clothing?

Not in the name, but it helps with domains: adding clothing freed a .com for 7 of 20 two-word names. Adding wear in front worked more often.

Is a .shop or .co domain fine?

Yes, if the renewal works for you. A standard .shop renews at $59.99, and every real-word .co we checked was taken.

Do I need a trademark before I start selling?

No, registration is optional. Search the register before launch so you do not rename after printing labels.

What if the name I want is taken?

Add a word rather than misspelling it. A misspelling sounds the same and can still confuse customers.

Name your brand and see your first pieces.
