  10. Questions people ask about starting a clothing brand

To start a clothing brand, decide who it is for, design three to five pieces around one idea, choose how they get made, price each piece for profit and sell through your own store. With print on demand you can do all of it in about a week without buying stock, because each piece is made only after someone orders it.

  • 9 stepsfrom an idea to your first sale
  • $28.58to make a hoodie printed front and back
  • 7 daysto design, sample and open a store
  1. Pick a niche

    One customer, one idea

  2. Name it

    Domain, handles, trademarks

  3. Logo and colors

    One color, 4 inches wide

  4. Choose how it is made

    Print on demand first

  5. Design 3 to 5 pieces

    A hoodie, a tee, a cap

  6. Order samples

    Wear them before you sell

  7. Price for profit

    About twice the cost

  8. Build your store

    Pages, policies, checkout

  9. Launch

Tease it, show it, open small

Step 1: Pick a niche and a customer

Brands that take off early are specific. "Streetwear" is a category; "streetwear for people who are out late in the city" is a brand. Finish one line: a clothing brand for [who] who [what they care about]. Here are three directions from KickStart's style picker:

Already have a team, a club or followers? Start there. People who know you are the easiest first customers, and our use cases show how each kind of brand begins.

Step 2: Name your brand and check that it is free

A good name is short, easy to spell after hearing it once and not used by another clothing brand. Check four things before you commit:

  1. Search the name

With the words clothing and brand

  2. Check the domain

A .com first, .shop or .co if it is taken

  3. Check the handles

In the Instagram and TikTok apps

  4. Search trademarks

In the US, the USPTO's free tools

When we ran 50 names through these checks, 49 already had their .com registered. How to name a clothing brand shows the patterns that still work.

Step 3: Design a logo and brand colors

Your logo prints small: about 4 inches wide on a chest and smaller on a cap. Pick a mark that reads in one color at that size, plus two or three brand colors.

Nine typeset logos for an example brand called Still: wordmarks, monograms and badge emblems in black and cobalt

Dark garments with one light ink, or light garments with one dark ink, print cleanly. Clothing brand logo ideas shows five styles at the size they print.

Step 4: Choose how your clothes get made

This choice sets your budget, your speed and your margins.

Most new brands start with print on demand and move best sellers to bulk later. The 7-day print on demand plan walks through it.

Step 5: Design your first collection

Start with three pieces that share one idea: a hero hoodie with a chest mark and a back graphic, a tee with the same art simplified, and an embroidered cap that carries only the logo.

Describe each piece the way you would to a friend: the brand, the garment, what goes on the chest and the back. That sentence is what you type into KickStart, which draws the artwork and places it on real garments. Keep chest marks about 4 inches wide, save detailed art for the back, and use flat colors, since thin glows disappear in print.

Step 6: Order samples before you sell

Order one of every piece and wear it. Check the print, the fit, the color in daylight and how it looks after a wash. Samples also give you your first real photos.

  • 2 to 5 daysfor Printful to make an order
  • 3 to 4 daysmore for standard US shipping

Step 7: Price every piece for profit

Price from your costs: what the piece costs to make, plus card fees, plus what you want to keep. About twice the cost to make is a good start.

T-shirt (Bella+Canvas 3001) (front print)$11.92

A hoodie printed front and back costs $28.58, so at $55 you keep about $24 after card fees. See the first-month budget and prices for 12 pieces in every size.

Questions people ask about starting a clothing brand

How much money do I need to start a clothing brand?

About $110 for a first month on print on demand, mostly samples, a domain and a software plan. The cost breakdown lists every line.

How long does it take?

One to two weeks with print on demand; samples take the longest. Bulk printing and cut and sew add weeks to months.

Do I need design skills?

No. You need a clear idea of who the brand is for. Describe pieces in plain words and KickStart draws the artwork, or upload your own.

Is print on demand profitable?

Yes, if you price for it. Each piece costs more than in a bulk run, but you never pay for stock that does not sell.

Can I bring an existing brand?

Yes. Upload your logo and references and keep your name and colors. The FAQ covers what carries over.

Kickstart your clothing brand.
